Question

What is the difference between "race" and "ethnicity" in Ignite Growth Platform?

Answer

The difference is rooted in the intent behind them.

What is "race"?

Race can be thought of as a group of people who share physical traits (e.g., skin color, eye shape); the Census Bureau defines "race" as a person’s self-identification with one or more social groups. An individual can report as White, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, or some other race. Survey respondents may report multiple races.

What is "ethnicity"?

Ethnicity can be thought of as a group of people who share a common history and culture; the Census Bureau uses ethnicity to determine whether a person is of Hispanic origin or not. For this reason, ethnicity is broken out in two categories, Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino. Hispanics may report as any race.

Race in Audience Insights is supplied by clients in the encounter data. Ethnicity comes from the consumer market list and is not available in Audience Insights.

Note that "Race" will not be populated for non-patients and will only be populated when it is supplied in the encounter data.
