Question

How are Primary Care visits categorized?

Answer

Primary Care is typically defined as a set of specialties such as: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, etc. Remember, Ignite Service Lines categorizes based on why a service was done, not on who did the service, and therefore you will find Primary Care visits in every Ignite Service Line.

Examples of our “why” for Primary Care visit categorization:

  • If you see your primary care physician (PCP) for your hypertension, then that is a Cardiology visit because the PCP is diagnosing and treating the cardiovascular system.
  • If you see your PCP for your diabetes, then the encounter is tied to Endocrinology.
  • If you sprain or strain your ankle and see your PCP, this is an Orthopedics encounter.
  • If your PCP helps you with asthma treatment, the visit is for Pulmonology.
